"Xilinx is pleased to be collaborating with industry leaders Intel and Agilent to accelerate the industry-wide transition from PCI to PCI Express," said Per Holmberg, director of marketing for Programmable Systems at Xilinx. "By using the programmability and serial transceiver capability of the Virtex-II Pro device, Xilinx was able to develop our core and this demonstration in parallel with our participation in the definition of the specification underscoring the capability and benefits of programmable systems."

    About the Demonstration

The demonstration shows the promise of PCI Express technology, which is intended to maximize the performance and feature quality for high-performance workstations and consumer gaming devices. The demonstration is protocol and electrically compatible to the v1.0 base PCI Express specification as outlined by the PCI-SIG and uses the proven Rocket I/O(TM) 3.125 Gbps serial transceivers of Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGA -- the only device available on the market capable of implementing the PCI Express specification. Conference attendees can view the video on monitors attached to two PCs connected by standard InfiniBand(TM) cables and connectors.
